Nadezhda Petrova

cursed one

“Walls have ears.
Doors have eyes.
Trees have voices.
Beasts tell lies.
Beware the rain.
Beware the snow.
Beware the man
You think you know.”

Nadezhda (called Nadia) always seems to hover awkwardly near the edges and corners of all groups and all rooms. It’s as if she feels like she’s a ghost who doesn’t fully belong in the realm of the living – as if she’s just there by the sheer generosity of the room. She seems delightedly flustered by any attention paid to her, and will chirrup in awkward and clumsy speech. She’s sweet and polite – at least at first glance though no one as of yet is close enough to tell otherwise – and very eager to please.

She tends to wear old clothes that envelop her – huge baggy sweaters and leggings tending to be the brunt of it – and large hats to protect her skin. She almost always smells like the artifical coconut of cheap suntan lotion.

It’s the way we sing that makes ‘em dream
And to Christ, a cross
And to me: a chair

My little runaway
When you feel like everyone
